February
Does anybody like February? I admit that there are some Februaries I like… when it’s not too cold and we get some snow regularly to cover up the brown and give the world a quick refresh. This February was not that. Temps weren’t bad but the snow just slowly turned to ice turned to brown and stayed that way. This meant there wasn’t a lot of motivation to get out and photograph very much. I got out a few times to Swiss Valley and Whitewater Canyon and to my normal spots around town but there wasn’t much to get overly excited about. A quick trip out of Dubuque for a much-needed “good-food-and-first-dining-out-in-23-months” lunch at Schera’s, an Algerian restaurant in Elkader, Iowa, produced my favorite photo of the month. The Motor Mill on the Turkey River is oft-photographed (for good reason) but I wanted something that featured the tree that grows on the north side yet still included the bridge as well. Mid-day isn’t usually the best time for photography, but it worked out for me in this instance.
As I’m typing this on March 6 I’ve already gotten more photos that I like in March than I did in all of February, and I am SO looking forward to a Spring Break trip and all the photo ops that I will get, hopefully including a little green even!
