Or at least that’s what I always thought. Yes, I played a lot of music growing up - piano for a bit, clarinet in band and orchestra, saxophones in jazz band - and loved it. Some people (mostly my mom) claimed I was an excellent writer. But visual art? Nope. Nobody would have said I had any talent for that. Somewhere along the line, though, I got a little digital camera and started shooting.
Now, a few years down the road, I have a few people (including my mom, still) telling me that they like my photos. Some even want to pay me for them. (I usually let them!) And I’m finding that there’s almost nothing I’d rather be doing than getting up early, finding a beautiful spot and/or an interesting subject, and pointing my camera at it in hopes that I’ll capture the feeling that I’m experiencing in that moment and be able to share something unique. I am fortunate to live in place that deserves to be seen and enjoyed. It is my goal to capture at least a few moments - and a few places - in an around the Driftless Region I call home and share them with you all.
Am I an artist now? I suppose maybe I am. Just don’t ask me to dance.
I am not an artist.
Yes, this photo of me above is in Iowa, but I bet the number of people who could identify the location is very small!
